BRUSSELS (Reuters) -The European Union aims to double its financial support to Greenland, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday.

“Europe and Greenland will always be each other’ trusted and reliable partners. We want to deepen our cooperation. That’s why we aim to double our financial support to Greenland,” she said in a statement on X.

In March, following comments by U.S. President Donald Trump about wanting to take control of the Arctic island, von der Leyen said that the EU would always support sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
