New Delhi: Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar Wednesday hinted at the imminent rollout of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Israel.
Reposting an X post on the official account of the Embassy of India in Israel, Azar wrote: “Coming soon in Israel”.
Azar’s revelation comes months after India and Israel signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 26 February 2026, agreeing to explore “linking UPI with Israel’s fast payment system to enhance interoperability and strengthen economic ties”, according to a Ministry of External Affairs press release.
The tweet reposted by Azar quoted an Indian Express report from 11 August that described how India has turned UPI into a powerful tool of digital diplomacy.

This is not the first time the Israeli Ambassador has expressed the desirability of the joint digital initiative. In an interview to ET Now in November 2025, Azar had said that the Bank of Israel was considering UPI adoption, declaring: “We want to adopt UPI.”
The latest development underlines the globalisation of India’s UPI system.
It is already available in more than eight countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius and Qatar.
X users welcomed the possible move. “What a fantastic development”, read a comment on Azar’s post. Another user wrote, “Proud moment for India!”
