BEIJING, April 22 (Reuters) – A group of Chinese naval vessels, including a new destroyer, on Wednesday passed through a narrow waterway between the Japanese islands of Yonaguni and Iriomote as they returned to China after testing their far-seas capabilities.
Vessel formation 133 dispatched by the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) Eastern Theater Command has completed its training in the Western Pacific, and has returned through the Yonaguni-Iriomote Waterway, said the command, which is responsible for East China, East China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.
The PLA formation sailed through the same waterway on Sunday to reach the Pacific Ocean, after a Japanese destroyer passed through the Taiwan Strait on Friday, a transit that Beijing had said was a “deliberate provocation”.
