Beijing, Jun 18 (PTI) China on Thursday welcomed the signing of an agreement between the US and Iran to end the war in West Asia and said Beijing will consolidate and deepen ties with Tehran.
China welcomes the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a media briefing here.
“As a comprehensive strategic partner of Iran, China stands ready to consolidate and deepen political mutual trust with Iran, enhance mutually-beneficial cooperation in various fields, and bring the China-Iran comprehensive strategic partnership forward,” he said, highlighting the strategic ties between the two countries.
China, a long-term ally of Iran in the past, defied US sanctions and imported Iranian oil at lower prices while Iran had a strong defence tie-up with Beijing.
On Wednesday, Lin announced that China will send humanitarian aid to Iran and Lebanon to help with reconstruction.
On the US-Iran agreement, Lin said it provides favourable conditions for easing tensions in the Middle East.
The international community is following the implementation of the Iran-US deal for the first stage of negotiations and the upcoming stage two negotiations, he said.
“At this critical stage, relevant parties, including Israel, need to follow the overwhelming trend of peace and stability in the region and do more to help Iran and the US implement the deal and promote stage two negotiations, rather than the other way around,” he said. PTI KJV ZH ZH
