TAIPEI, June 4 (Reuters) – China should “acknowledge the truth” about what happened 37 years ago on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Thursday on the anniversary of an event Beijing treats as taboo.

“I sincerely hope that China can face up to the June 4 incident of 37 years ago, acknowledge the truth, soothe the pain, and open the door to reconciliation and dialogue,” Lai said in a post on his Facebook page.
