LIMA -A bus accident in the Peruvian Andes mountains left at least 20 people dead on Tuesday, a local police colonel said on local radio outlet RPP.

Jhonny Rolando Valderrama, head of a highway protection division, told RPP that the accident occurred on the Los Libertadores highway in the Ayacucho region, located in the south-central Andes.

Deadly bus accidents are common on Peru’s precarious mountainous roads.

At least 25 people died in April when a bus fell into a river in Peru’s northern Cajamarca region, while last September at least 24 people died in a similar accident in the Anco region.
