New Delhi: ASEAN member states and their partners have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening disaster resilience in the region at the 12th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management (AMMDM) and 13th Meeting of Conference of the Parties to the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER), held in Brunei Darussalam between 24 and 25 October.
The meetings, themed “Building a Resilient ASEAN through Inclusive and Sustainable Disaster Recovery”, saw the launch of the ASEAN Ministerial Declaration on Building a Resilient ASEAN through Inclusive and Sustainable Disaster Recovery. The participants also issued the ASEAN Ministerial Statement on the Commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of Indian Ocean Tsunami, marking the 20th anniversary of the devastating natural disaster. The meetings reviewed the progress of the AADMER Work Programme 2021-2025, noting achievements in disaster management capacity building, disaster risk communication, emergency logistics, and emergency response and assessment team training.
The 13th Meeting of the Parties to the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER) and the 12th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management (AMMDM) were held in Brunei Darussalam from 24 to 25 October. The meetings reaffirmed the commitment to strengthen cooperation towards enhancing disaster resilience. The AADMER Meeting and the AMMDM Meeting were chaired by H.E. Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister of Home Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, as the Chair of AMMDM 2024, and H.E. Kun Kim, Senior Minister and First Vice-Chairman of the National Committee for Disaster Management of Cambodia, as the Vice-Chair.
In conjunction with the two meetings, ASEAN Commemorative Event to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami as well as the ASEAN Day for Disaster Management and the International Day for Disaster Reduction in 2024 were also held.
