Kriti Verma: The Rise of the Creator Economy Has Also Democratized the Entertainment Industry in India

With the increased internet penetration across the country and a surge of digital streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and many local players like AltBalaja, Zee5, etc., the way content is being consumed has changed significantly in India. In recent years, we have witnessed a transformative shift in the entertainment landscape catalyzed by the emergence of the creator economy. Acclaimed actress and model, Kriti Verma, citing a report mentions, “According to a 2021 study conducted by Oxford Economics, the creator economy has established itself as a significant cornerstone in contributing to the overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. YouTube creators single-handedly bolstered India’s GDP by a staggering INR 10,000 Crore in 2021.” 

 

The democratization of content creation tools and increased level of creative competencies have given rise to a new generation of creators who are reshaping the way we consume and interact with entertainment. Describing what the creator economy is, Kriti Verma, says, “The creator economy, a term coined to describe the ecosystem of independent content creators, has gained significant traction worldwide.” Adding to her explanation, she mentions, “In India, this movement gained momentum with the proliferation of social media platforms and video-sharing websites. Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok provide a space for individuals to showcase their talents, skills, and unique perspectives to a global audience.”

Personal Branding and Financial Independence 

The creator economy has disrupted the entertainment industry in profound ways. Established media houses, legacy brands, and startups are now recognizing the influence and reach of individual creators and are increasingly collaborating with them to create different Intellectual Properties and digital assets. Movie studios, record labels, and television networks are all tapping into the vast audiences that creators have cultivated. Moreover, the definition of ‘celebrity’ has evolved. It is no longer confined to actors and musicians; YouTubers, podcasters, and social media influencers are now considered celebrities in their own right. This shift has reshaped the dynamics of fame and stardom. 

Speaking about the financial independence that the creator economy empowers an individual with, Kriti Verma shares, “One of the cornerstones of the creator economy is the ability for creators to monetize their content. Ad revenue, brand partnerships, sponsorships, merchandise sales, and crowdfunding are just a few of the revenue streams available to content creators. This newfound financial independence pursues individuals to follow their passions full-time, blurring the lines between traditional employment and entrepreneurial ventures.”

Furthermore, creators are diversifying their content across various platforms. A YouTuber might also have a substantial following on Instagram and X (erstwhile Twitter). This multi-platform presence not only expands their reach but also allows them to tap into different demographics and explore diverse content formats. Whether it is food, fashion, gaming, travel, or even pottery, there is an audience eager to engage with specialized content. 

Challenges and Future Prospects

While the creator economy has paved the way for new opportunities, it too encounters its fair share of obstacles, as is common in any industry. Issues such as monetization, fake followers, copyright infringement, and platform algorithm changes are common problems that become a hurdle for any creator. Additionally, as the space becomes more competitive, standing out and maintaining audience engagement becomes increasingly challenging. 

Kriti Verma says, “Looking ahead, the creator economy in India is poised for even greater growth. As internet penetration continues to expand, and as more Indians come online, the potential audience for creators is bound to increase. Furthermore, emerging technologies like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are opening exciting new possibilities for immersive content experiences.”

The rise of the creator economy in India has democratized entertainment, providing a platform for diverse voices and talents to thrive. The impact of this movement is not confined to the digital realm; it has permeated traditional entertainment, redefining celebrity and content consumption. As we move forward, the creator economy is set to play an even more influential role in shaping the cultural and entertainment landscape of India.
