New Delhi: The central government’s recent advisory to platforms asking them to seek permission from the government before launching under-trial AI products in the country will only apply to the “significant” platforms and not startups, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT (MeitY) Rajeev Chandrasekhar clarified Monday.

The minister posted on X: “Recent advisory of @GoI_MeitY needs to be understood…Advisory is aimed at the Significant platforms and permission seeking from Meity is only for large platforms and will not apply to startups (sic).”

The government Friday issued an advisory asking all platforms to get permission from it before launching AI products that are being tested or in the beta stage of development, before making them available for Indian internet users.

The advisory also asked all platforms that deployed generative AI to offer their services to Indian users only after “appropriately labelling the possible and inherent fallibility or unreliability of the output generated”.

On Monday, in a post on X, the minister added that the advisory was aimed at untested AI platforms and that the process of seeking permission, labelling and consent-based disclosure to users about untested platforms was an “insurance policy to platforms who can otherwise be sued by consumers”.

“Safety & Trust of India’s Internet is a shared and common goal for Govt, users and Platforms (sic),” Chandrasekhar said.
