Almost complete control over media allows the party to control the news cycle. Meanwhile their extremely well funded IT cell is flooding WhatsApp memes. Folks chuckle at the supposed jokes and forward them to their groups without stopping to wonder who is funding all these forwards which are always about opposition figures. And these are not just kids memes, but instead seem to be written by folks with strong background in advertising and behavioral sciences. One point you and Shivam make which makes no sense: How does BJP and Modi have total control over the media when, as we can see from almost every opinion / editorial article in the last 1 year, majority of journalists are in fact against them?
Atleast you do accept the other points then. Coming to your comment – the right place to start is what’s the expected role of the media? It necessarily has to have a critical eye on those wielding power at a given time, and to allow alternate voices to reach the public. To inform the ruled what the rulers may not be doing well. Otherwise it’s not media, it’s a friend circle.
It’s become a cliche to accuse journalists critical of Modi govt today to be Congis. But if one tries to dig up their old videos and news coverage say for UPA2, you might be surprised to see these same supposed Congis sharing criticism of that govt on matters we all know well by now. And that’s how it should be.
And today, you just need to find out all the interviews of our PM or Amit Shah on you tube and make a list of kind of questions asked to them, to get a sense of where most of the media stands today. And then feel free to dig up old interview videos or articles of Shri Manmohan Singh or even Shri Vajpayee to see the difference.
