Far from abandoning Tibet the US has been mending new relationships with the Tibet issue along with East Turkestan’s to fight China.
The US Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act and US Tibetan Policy 2018 and Support Act 2019 are solid support by legislatures that are now US policies.
