How many Indian industries can honestly say that they have not supported and manipulated the old Indian policies to derive disproportionate profits. With the government support they thrived on inefficiency by selling third rate products which the consumers were forced to buy. In addition most of these products commanded premium for which was all in cash free of any tax .
Post liberalisation by and by they all had to stand up to the competition “shape Up or Ship out.” A lot of them big names did shiped out. Most of them had their growths because of the access they had to the powers that be.
All those who thought that things will never change have gone belly up, the ones who did provide for from their hidden/ undue profits have managed to survive, but still feel the pain of not being able to mint the profits like the old days with bad quality in sellers market.
All of them fear the taxman because the old regimes created condition for them to make that black money compounded by their own greed a living example is the Real Estate sector and many others. Coming down from 200-300% profit to 15-20% is not easy, lifestyles have to change.
If these are only 1% of the population and only a small percentage of them were involved in undesirable activities in the old time, why bother if they have the fear. In any case they will not come forward and accept but will have to be dragged out.
This robbery in convenience with the rulers is worse than rape and murder about which we have non- stop debates in parliament demanding hanging and lynching , but not for this robbery. WHY?????
There are industrialists – Rahul Bajaj, Ratan Tata in the forefront – who have played their business innings, covet little in life. It would be an honour and national duty for them to spend a day each week in Delhi, meeting with senior government functionaries, offering inputs, advice, guidance, also honest feedback, on the economy. Of a far higher quality and utility than is generated within the formal structures of government. Over the last six years, listening not just to them but keeping open house for all businessmen who visited for a purpose nobler than simply getting their files cleared would have allowed the government to steer a more prudent and productive course for the economy. 2. Such a harsh response to well meaning advice indicates insecurity, paranoia. A stubborn refusal to confront reality, or attempt a much needed turnaround.
