This is a truly shameless piece of the delusional Ms Thapar. Public intellectuals did confront authority in her day but she was not one of them. It was the right wing that did the confronting. She was a darbari scholar who towed the ruling party’s left wing line. Indira Congress was KGB sponsored in to aggresively pushing communism and leftism. Those funds funded ‘scholar’s like this one who did not even bother to learn Sanskrit but chose to write opinion pieces on Indian history. The left wing intellectuals today find themselves bereft of state sponsorship and are not used to the new normal.
Are public intellectuals even relevent today when social media has democratised two way communication? They were supposed to be conduits between people and govt. With social media, there role as info channel has become superflous. The expertise part is anyway irrelevant for most part.
