Jockey International entered the Indian market in 1995 through an exclusive license agreement with Page Industries Ltd which is now looking to step up its exclusive stores in the country by tapping the smaller markets in tier II & III cities.
Presently, the current size of the Indian innerwear market is about Rs. 15,870 crore (approx $2.5 billion) and is expected to continue to progress and estimated to touch Rs 68,270 crore (approx $10.7 billion) by 2024, according to report by consulting firm Technopak.
Jockey clocked Rs 2,000 crore in revenues last year, and has been growing consistently at a rate of 19% year-on-year. The increase in production capacity is likely to increase the overall market share of the company which is currently approximately around 14% percent.
“As the brand expands in the country, we are looking to increase production. We are looking to double our production capacity from current 200 million pieces per annum to 400 million pieces by 2020,” Page Industries Managing Director Sunder Genomal told news agency.
As price-points in India are lower than its other markets and brand-awareness, aspiration and accessibility are on the rise, the potential for growth in India is huge, Genomal explained.
“We operate on a franchise based model, and spend about Rs 80 crore annually on establishing outlets,” Genomal said.

Being from this field (textile manufacturing), I think i am more than qualified to comment on this article. You have got every point bang on correct, and it’s not limited to underwear. Even other garments such as shirts are affected. The payment cycle has reached almost 9-10 months on an average which used to be 60-90 days. All of us are facing the crunch. Most manufacturers are trying to lure in buyers with various schemes from Silver coins to microwaves and in some cases even bangkok tours to their buyers, but still there is marginal improvement in sales. People are just not paying up. If this trend continues, then all small businesses will be wiped out over the next 6-8 months. It’s an alarming situation and the government needs to urgently bring some relief packages for manufacturers to be able to sustain the added pressure on payment delays. Won’t comment on why this scenario has arised, but it wasn’t the case pre-Demo and GST. The fact that baffles me is the sales figures of Mercedes and amazon/flipkart in such scenarios. It only goes to show that priorities of buyers have changed. People are not buying clothing the same way that they used to.

One would think after reading the article that earlier people were using their black money to buy underwears. Now because of twin effects of demonetisation and GST, people have stopped buying underwears. Is this believable?
Most of the brand’s arr very costly n the quality of it particularly the elestics are of poor quality. Moreover ,at most of the shops these are almost 1 to 2 yrs old stock, as a result after just few wash it becomes lose . No shopkeeper ever replaces itn no one can afford frequent buying n wasting money. The size of any two brands are never same..there are many such issues the manufacturers must look into. they can’t simply expect people to spend heavily on all such essential every now n then. Being from this field (textile manufacturing), I think i am more than qualified to comment on this article. You have got every point bang on correct, and it’s not limited to underwear. Even other garments such as shirts are affected. The payment cycle has reached almost 9-10 months on an average which used to be 60-90 days. All of us are facing the crunch. Most manufacturers are trying to lure in buyers with various schemes from Silver coins to microwaves and in some cases even bangkok tours to their buyers, but still there is marginal improvement in sales. People are just not paying up. If this trend continues, then all small businesses will be wiped out over the next 6-8 months. It’s an alarming situation and the government needs to urgently bring some relief packages for manufacturers to be able to sustain the added pressure on payment delays. Won’t comment on why this scenario has arised, but it wasn’t the case pre-Demo and GST. The fact that baffles me is the sales figures of Mercedes and amazon/flipkart in such scenarios. It only goes to show that priorities of buyers have changed. People are not buying clothing the same way that they used to.

What are you guys trying to do ? Wash your dirty undies in public ? A lot of inner wear is bought on line these days. Has that been accounted for ? People also pick them up when they go abroad at 4 for $10 . Texture, elastic etc could also be improved. Costs too need to come down. Rural India will probably buy a shirt for Rs 150 rather than a jockey for Rs 250 !
I use Euro underwear from Rupa, I don’t get it in any store, all of them sell Jockey only, so I buy it online. There are many messages in above statement. Before Jockey, all’brands were always available, the Rupa brand with antibacterial fabric doesn’t itch even on second day. Jockey is worst in this. Therefore, the quality of Indian hosiery is best. But Jockey with probably high discounts and longer credit stuffed all MBO with their stock. Sequentially all Indian brands forced to moved out or marginalized.
We, the Whatsapp warriors, forward many messages about being indian, buying indian, but we buy Jockey only. Fancy name, fancy design, but same quality. Generally, our wives buy them. Afterall in your balcony, a Jockey hanging on the clothesline or a Amul macho, which one will look better?

Did anyone checked with a retailer , i am myself into distribution of inner garments and what i can vouch for is that it is a supply side issue . The stock is just not coming from the manufacturer , it appears an artificial slow down being created in this segment. Check with the retailer as to what they have to say.
Actually,What is happening is we are getting used to Jockey,Van Heusen,VIP Frenchie etc more than our local brands.If inners are seen also,It is not a shame as it was.So,People buy classy inners…I think this is happening coz Inners and Unders are also becoming fashion.Another thing is this brands last more than the indigenous ones,So people don’t buy them that often like they bought traditional ones

The business people and the traders should also look into their method of selling and pricing. they had a field day during the pre-demonetisation days and they are able to come out of that greedy high margin business. See, the e-commerce business growth; they are growing lips and bounds because of their attractive business policy towards the customers.
Though it appears to be silly it is a fact that economy is crippling. Every sector is facing the problem. Blood line of our economy is diesel. Diesel sales fell down in the last five months.. Our business is a direct derivative of Clients business. It means when clients have good business returns, they spend more on ads. Most of the brand’s arr very costly n the quality of it particularly the elestics are of poor quality. Moreover ,at most of the shops these are almost 1 to 2 yrs old stock, as a result after just few wash it becomes lose . No shopkeeper ever replaces itn no one can afford frequent buying n wasting money. The size of any two brands are never same..there are many such issues the manufacturers must look into. they can’t simply expect people to spend heavily on all such essential every now n then. Our khadi village board has never be ventured into this segment of inner wears both for men, women .
