Honest question. Should geopolitics in general, in South Asia in particular, be seen as a zero sum game between India and China. Consider Nepal’s hydroelectric sector. India virtually the only buyer of surplus power, using it as a conditionality to block any Chinese investment or presence, even if there is transparent international bidding. Each neighbour desires trade and investment with both major economies. They would be happy if not presented with a binary choice.

These tiny neighbours – Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh – have mastered the art of playing off India against China. They are friends of both and loyal to none.
There is no sense of partnership over shared culture and history. And there’s absolutely no gratitude for all the facilities and special privileges extended by India over the last several decades.
Any money thrown at them is as good as money burnt to ashes. Just does not make sense.
Nepal has made a choice. Let it live with China. India must cancel all special privileges provided to citizens of Nepal. The visa-free entry to India, holding work-permit free jobs in India and every other special privilege must be cancelled.
Let them party with the Chinese. As it is they have a communist bent of mind.
