Even if government is the largest employer, formal sector is just 5% of our economy which includes private formal empoyers as well. Thus, the argument by that LBSNAA Prof. Is a flawed one
A similar survey,if undertaken in respect of candidates belonging to the Reserved Categories,would also reveal that a big chunk of the posts had been cornered by sons and daughters of those belonging to the higher strata of those categories like IAS,IPS and Class I officers,the reason being awareness and affordability to join prestigious institutions while studying and ability to join coaching centres of repute.The availability of reservation and free coaching etc., to a majority has not percolated to the bottom level so well that many are still unaware of.
Nobody will become an IAS officer by means of parents pushing unless they study and work their way up, to get there. Maybe, they have the resources at their disposal as much as the environment which is favorable for facilitation of what they want to be, if it is so.
Ever ……since the British rule, The Indian Civil Services was the most sought after career for many Indians. So, if any percentage calculations of the lineage is worked upon, it would only give distorted figures. These are the people who would have wanted to be civil servants with or without their family members or parents being one, as it is the candidate who prepares for the exam, not their parents instead of the candidates.
Truly, it is power, but much more than power it is a “service” which can be done by means of power and commitment.
How can a written examination testing the memory retention capacity of a candidate be the best test to become a senior executive officer in the government? The selection process of civil servants in India is obviously flawed and favours those who are good at rote learning and memorizing.
you are beyond pathetic. upsc is the only exam where u cant clear it with rote learning. see every year iit aiims iim toppers are getting top ranks. grape is sour. we know. go cry in corner of ur room.,
Actually the main thing is that the son of a govt. employee has a strong background support from economically so they can study for freely without having a tension to support his family immediately economically. On the other hand a student who is belonging from a poor family due to lack of money most of them end their study at a certain point. They engage themselves in work to support their family. Few of thems can dream a big. Economic factor plays a huge role.

The journalist needs to run some fact check before trying desperately to sensitize a normal article. Govt of India is the single largest employer in India. Now add to that state govts, universities, public bodies and it forms not only the single largest bloc of employment in India remotely incomparable with any other employer but also the bloc which has a very high proportion as employer. It is quite obvious that any domain would have a majority of qualifiers coming from the above. What’s is the big deal about it? The quality of journalism is being consciously mutilated by e-zines and the profession of journalism being made extinct by writers such as the author of this article.
It’s time for a course for every one aspiring to become civil servants why a Mbbs,an engineer entering it because of lacunae in its options for around 32 optional subjects from mechanical engineering to math to polsc to sociology to host of other subjects.There must be a strict subjects like public policy governance law constitution etc which is required to administer state craft and not any every subject
Why foundation course after qualifying whynt it during Postgraduate, graduate days? After selection it can only orientation course to induct the newly selectee
