“…Governance needs a strong central pole, he said, adding the country can have regional players around, but “you cannot have a confederation of regional players”.
This is what Mr Jaitley said. I do not know why a narrative of “Strong Centre” is being propagated by the BJP these days. Yesterday Ajit Doval was saying the same thing. This is one of those canards that is expected to benefit the party which FIRST spreads it, implying that they are best suited to achieve it. Just think about this: if Rahul Gandhi had been using this phrase, “strong centre”, then over time people would have formed an impression that RG was talking of a scenario different from the present one, and that, by implication would have suggested that HE WAS PROPOSING TO PRESENT A STRONG CENTRE if he could have his way. This might have got some traction because the present government was appearing to be more confused than strong, prone to taking “reckless strong decisions” and not “wise strong decisions”. Cases in point would be demonetization and GST.
Anyway, I strayed a bit. I wanted to comment on Mr Jaitley’s statement, “… you cannot have a confederation of regional players”. My point is, why not? Regional players have their ears to the ground, they have firsthand information on the problems of the Masses, and therefore they are best suited to address those problems. A confederation of such regional players will have their hand directly on the pulse of the nation.
By drumming up noise about a “strong government” late in the day, the BJP hopes to cover-up its botched decisions of recent past as bold decisions. But people know better.
