The Tuber browser, backed by Chinese cybersecurity giant 360 Security Technology, appeared to provide the users the ability to legally visit overseas websites & social media platforms.
We blame the Right wing for most demands for censorship or banning, but evidence shows Left liberals are equally guilty in trying to control children’s content.
Indian and Pakistani names including Dr Syeda Hameed, Nandita Das, Salima Hashmi & writer Mohd Hanif participated in an online discussion ahead of Independence Day of both nations.
Pakistan’s government passed new rules regulating social media last month, and mandated that companies will have to share data with agencies when asked.
All the world’s an outrage. So, even before anything happened or Modi government protested, Hotstar pre-emptively removed Last Week Tonight episode on the PM.
Producer and director of the four ad films, Sanghamitra Choudhury said she feels 'helpless' due to the delay caused by the objections, and might consult her lawyers.
In service with the British military since 2019, it is also known as the Martlet missile. Ukrainians have also deployed these missiles against Russian troops.
Pakistan’s army has been a rentier force available to a reasonable bidder. It has never come to the aid of any Muslims including Palestinians or the Gazans, except making noises here and there.
*****“…….especially voices that disagree with the government of the day on politics and policy. The answer to all your questions is national security.”
OK this is a refrain of a section of the media including “experts”, opinionators (if I may), commentators and their ilk. We are aware that media plays a major role in sustaining democracy. We also know that the media too is no saint. But cross your heart and tell me that you don’t have an agenda when you write your pieces. Cross your heart and tell me what is foremost in your mind? The country, the people, yourself or just the politics? There have been and is failings on the part of all Governments. There was, is or will be any utopia (ramrajya (a nonpolitical reference)), anywhere in the world.
So, when we know what is in the article just by reading the name of the author, how authentic can all his work be? An unbiased reporting of expressing views is when you talk about the good as well as the bad – by anybody for that matter.
Now the point of freedom of press. India is a diverse country where historically it has been recorded that most battles and wars (from the times of the epics, Alexander and after) have been lost because of a traitor in the ranks. Yet, in a diverse Nation as India the media freely discuss LAC, LOC, all defence matters, inside information of Governance et al, attributing the same most of the time to “sources”. Who or what are these “sources”, only the media knows. They are not obliged to reveal these sources.
In such a circumstance with so much of unfettered freedom, if questions are asked (AS IS BEING DONE IN ALL DEMOCRATIC NATIONS, including blocking the account of a democratically elected President and Supreme commander) of the social media platforms, why are you crying foul?
Get real.
One simple question to Shivam. Can a book or a film spread rumors or fake news leading to a violent situation as fast as a tweet or a Facebook post can? Nope. If you’re to follow the same lengthy procedure for social media, by that time it would cause enough damage. So stop comparing apples to oranges.
Twitter bloakced hundreds of handles in the US immediately after the 6 january 2021 insurrection of Capitol in Washington DC. There was no public notice and wait period of 48 hours before banning these handles. So, how is this different in India situation, may I ask?
Within its territory, the sovereign is supreme. It is subject to the laws of the land, of course, but that can often become pro forma more than substantive. Hence something like retrospective amendment of tax laws ( Vodafone ) can pass muster. The column makes a persuasive case for the principles of natural justice to be followed. They should, but often aren’t. What India needs also to consider is how an increasingly unilateralist approach to businesses, including globally leading firms, will make it a less attractive place to do business in. Not just foreigners staying away, an increasing number of HNIs are emigrating, unable to stand a hot kitchen.
Twitter’s fake accounts, easily to manipulate “trends”, echo chambers, inconsistent policies, rampant abuse and proliferating fake news are all a cancer to civil society. And these are true regardless of which side of the political spectrum you belong to.
The country become a better place after Tik Tok was banned and will become even better once Twitter is sent packing.
Disagree with Shivam’s views.
We saw what happened when the ‘champions of free speech’ took over the Capitol in Washington. Trump’s twitter feed should have been blocked much much earlier.
Mr. Vij’s life is quite simple.
Anything and everything done by any BJP govt anywhere in India is “unconstitutional”. While anything and everything done by any non-BJP govt anywhere in India is Constitutional.
Armed with this very simple logic, he writes reams and reams of “enlightening” articles which The Print dutifully publishes.
For once, our beloved Pappu from The Print is talking reasonably. Everyone must have the right to voice out their opinions & have access to judicial remedy in case they are being prosecuted for it.
Indian court system will decide constitutionality, People can approach court if they think it is unonsitutional.

“In its 2005 Shreya Singhal judgment, the Supreme Court considered Section 69A…”
That judgment was handed down in 2015, not 2005. Do some proper research before dishing out gyaan.

Freedom of expression is not absolute.
Then that is no, “Freedom”. Why are bhakts so afraid of the spoken or written word ?
So much of the national discourse, especially during an election campaign, is violative of Sections 153 A and B, as well as 295 A.
The SC judgment of 2005 merits review by a larger Constitutional bench.

The constitution will be changed, brick by brick, the way we did with Babri Masjid.
It may take 2 or 3 more decades, but it surely will be done.
Don’t confuse Twitter with free speech.
