Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has talked about converting stubble to Methane and using it as a fuel in the states of Punjab and Haryana. Next door in UP, CM Adityanath has invited IOL and BPCL to look at using stubble and other organic waste to produce clean fuels. These are the correct approaches to dealing with the huge amounts of agricultural waste across India. Add to this increased numbers of electric buses and also cars and two wheelers in association with the increased use of biomass gasification and Fischer-Tropsch biodiesel manufacture, solar power for railway station platform roofs, government buildings, malls and other large structures, and India does have the potential to become one of the cleanest countries in the world. Time to use the talent in the IITs, RITs and the wealth of private engineering colleges of repute to make positive changes to infrastructure to promote a cleaner environment, to provide jobs in the clean energy industry, and to wean India off foreign sourced carbon fuels. Time to use Indian talent to help India instead of driving it overseas like happened decades ago when my generation was young. It can be done. All it takes is will. Two powerful Chief Ministers have shown that they think similarly, even though they may subscribe to completely different political ideologies. There’s massive US EXIM Bank financing available as well, and Indian companies have been fabricating biomass gasification plants for US and other companies for at least three decades. Time to do it for India!
