New Delhi: The India-Pakistan match at the Champions Trophy kicked off with Jasprit Bumrah receiving the International Cricket Council (ICC) awards and caps for his outstanding performance in 2024.

The fast-bowling legend is not part of the Champions Trophy due to a back injury he sustained during the fifth test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year.

Bumrah was presented with the ICC honours by the organisation’s president, Jay Shah. His accolades include the Sir Garfield Sobers Award—a prestigious award for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year—and the Test Cricketer of the Year award, as well as caps for being part of the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year and Test Team of the Year. All the honours came thanks to his remarkable performance in 2024.

His outstanding performance included claiming 71 test wickets at an average of 14.92. He also won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ title at the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies—where he took 15 wickets in India’s winning campaign, averaging 8.26 and maintaining an economy rate of 4.17.

Bumrah also became the fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 test wickets in 2024.

In the Champions Trophy, the star pacer has no choice but to support his team from the stands. He met the Indian team before the match. Visuals of the encounter are now circulating online.

Initially named in the 15-member squad, Bumrah was ruled out of the tournament after failing to recover fully on time. The 31-year-old underwent a second round of scans early in February before being ruled out. Harshit Rana was named as his replacement.

Bumrah’s latest injury update came from his wife, Sanjana Ganesan, who shared that he was doing “okay”. This update emerged during her chat with Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz on media day, where Sanjana, a sports presenter, was in attendance.

Asked about the India pacer’s fitness by the Bangladesh all-rounder, Sanjana Ganesan revealed that Bumrah is training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru as part of his recovery from a back injury.

“He is okay. He is training at the NCA,” Sanjana Ganesan had said.
