New Delhi: The Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been suspended for the next two international matches for showing dissent during the third ODI match against Bangladesh.
Kaur has been suspended for two separate breaches of the ICC’s Code of Conduct for smashing equipment and questioning an umpire’s decision.
An ICC release said: “The first incident occurred specifically when Kaur expressed frustration after her dismissal by hitting the wickets with her bat after she was adjudged caught at slip off spinner Nahida Akter in the 34th over of India’s innings.”
Kaur was fined 50 per cent match fee for the Level 2 offence and received three demerit points on her disciplinary record. She was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, relating to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”.
“Kaur was also fined 25 per cent of her match fee for a Level 1 offence relating to ‘public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match’ when, during the presentation ceremony, Kaur openly criticised the umpiring in the match,” the release added.
In the tied third ODI against the Bangladesh team Saturday, Kaur was adjudged leg before off a Nahida Akter delivery while trying to sweep. She disputed the decision, claiming a bottom edge and in a fit of rage shattered the stumps before walking back to the pavilion.
At the post-match presentation ceremony, Kaur termed the level of umpiring as “pathetic” and also sarcastically asked the umpires to be called to join the teams for the trophy ceremony.
Her behaviour prompted Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana to walk off with her team, while urging her Indian counterpart to learn some “manners”.
Kaur will miss the first two matches in the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games.
India ended the Bangladesh series with a 1-1 draw after being tied at 225 runs each in the third ODI.
The charges against Harmanpreet were brought by ICC international panel match referee Akter Ahmed, who is from Bangladesh.
