New Delhi: Is it big enough? Is it too big? Why is it so dark? And hairy? How are babies made? Why do periods hurt? A newly released book, Dr, Cuterus, is a one-stop scientific, funny, and easy to understand guide to everything you’ve always wondered about what’s ‘down there’. Or even up there!
Published by Penguin Books, ‘Dr. Cuterus’ by Tanaya Narendra will be released on Tuesday, 27 December November on Softcover, ThePrint’s online venue to launch non-fiction books.
Narendra’s book breaks the stigma about human body, contraception, menstruation, genitalia, sexual health and more, in a science-backed jargon free way. The simple read gets into the nitty-gritty of things. The author offers distinctions between sex and gender from the onset of the book and comprehensively breaks down misconceptions and wrong terminologies often used in daily parlance.
“We have all had a massive identity crisis when it comes to our genitals — most of us, almost all of us, in fact, have called the vulva the vagina our whole lives. ‘I’m going to shave my vagina’ (dear God, the horror of stuffing razor blades INSIDE your body); ‘I have vaginal darkness (HOW? How can you have darkness INSIDE your body?); ‘Vaginal wash’ (have you ever put soap inside your nose? Why would you put it INSIDE your genitals?)”, Narendra writes as she marks the distinction between the vulva and vagina that is often used interchangeably.
From Vajayanti – ‘the A-list celeb’ to trivia tidbits on the history of sex and sexuality, Narendra’s new book invites readers to embark on a “beautiful, technicolour musical” of a relationship with our bodies which otherwise remains a drab black and white production.
Narendra is an internationally trained medical doctor, embryologist, and scientist. For her groundbreaking work in medical education, Tanaya has been awarded Sexual Health Influencer of the Year 2020 by SH24 — the online sexual health partner of UK’s National Health Service (NHS). She is one of the most popular medical professionals on social media in India.
Tanaya runs @Dr_Cuterus, which has garnered over one million followers on Instagram and over 50 million views on YouTube. She uses fairy tales, mannequins, fun GIFs, and hilariously relatable examples to talk in a jargon-free manner about complex medical and sexual education topics, all wrapped up with an inclusive and gender-neutral bow.
