New Delhi: For decades, corporations have moved millions of people and tonnes of freight around the clock, all for the sake of profit, while sourcing supplies from faraway places. However, numerous modern startups are rewriting the norms.

‘Working to Restore’ investigates revolutionary strategies in nine areas: agriculture, waste, supply chain, inclusion for the common good, women in the workforce, travel, health, energy, and finance. The companies profiled are addressing global issues, including promoting responsible production and consumption, creating equitable opportunities for all, and advocating climate action. Chhabra emphasises how their work transcends the greenwashed notion of sustainability and ushers in a new era of regeneration and restoration.

The book focuses on innovative entrepreneurs who recognise that we cannot expect radical change if we attempt to maintain a system that has been dysfunctional for decades. Instead, their restoration and revitalization efforts should serve as a model for other forward-thinking businesses.

The author utilises her decades of reporting experience to examine the complexities and potential of regenerative business operations. Chhabra is a journalist who writes about sustainability, international development, and the emergence of brands with a social mission. She has contributed to numerous international and domestic publications over the past decade, including The Guardian, New York Times, Wired UK, Washington Post, Atlantic, Fast Company, Forbes, Stanford Social Innovation Review, and others.

Speaking about the book, Melissa Ho, Vice President of World Wildlife Fund says that the book “provides inspiring yet tangible examples from a wide range of sectors of how to bring business back into balance and how to value what matters most: ‘simplify and spend time immersed in life, not stuff.'”

Praising Chhabra’s work, Matthew Bishop, author and former The Economist business editor, notes that the book shares “stories of some of the best of these game-changing businesses”.

“If capitalism is to be transformed into the engine of inclusive, just, and sustainable prosperity we need, a new generation of purpose-driven companies must lead the way,” Bishop adds.
