N.D. Tiwari served as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice and once as the chief minister of Uttarakhand.
New Delhi: Narayan Dutt Tiwari, a four-time Congress chief minister, died Thursday at Delhi’s Max Hospital. It was his birthday today.
The 93-year-old, who was suffering from fever and pneumonia, died at 2.50 pm. He was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital on October 26.
Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat condoled Tiwari’s death.
In a tweet, Rawat said, “Uttarakhand can never forget Tiwari’s contribution to the state. N.D. Tiwari had contributed in making Uttarakhand industrially and economically self-sufficient.”

Formerly with the Praja Socialist Party, Tiwari joined the Congress in 1963.
Tiwari was the only Indian politician who served as the chief minister of two states — thrice in undivided Uttar Pradesh (1976-77, 1984-85, 1988-89) and once in Uttarakhand (2002-2007).
His close connection with the Gandhi family helped him take over as the chief minister of UP from Vir Bahadur Singh. In 1984, few months after Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Tiwari again helped Congress come to power in Uttar Pradesh.
All of Tiwari’s terms as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh were very brief, not lasting more than a year.
Tiwari had also served as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh between 2007 and 2009. He quit as the Governor after a sting allegedly showing him in a compromising position with three women.
In 2008, Tiwari courted controversy when Rohit Shekhar Tiwari filed a paternity suit claiming that Tiwari is his biological father. In 2012, the Delhi High Court established that Tiwari is Rohit’s biological father.
