Election Results Highlights: Nagaland, Tripura see BJP win; Meghalaya likely to witness NPP-BJP alliance

The counting of ballots is underway in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland, where voting on 178 seats was held on 16 & 27 February, the first round of polls this year.

New Delhi: The counting of votes for the assembly elections, held on 16 and 27 February, in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura began Thursday at 8 am.

Tripura, with 60 seats, voted on 16 February and saw a 87.6 per cent voter turnout, while Meghalaya, 59 seats, & Nagaland, where voting took place on 27 February, recorded a turnout of 85.17 per cent83.63 per cent respectively.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) looks all set for a second term in the state, with the party winning 20 seats and leading in 5 as of 5:45 pm. Among the NPP’s coalition partners in the outgoing government, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has won 11 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won 2 and was leading in 1. Meanwhile, the Congress, which emerged as the single-largest party in the last election with 21 seats only to be reduced to zero following defections, has won 5.

In Tripura, BJP-IPFT alliance has won 31 seats in the 60-member assembly securing second term in power, the Election Commission said. Outgoing Chief Minister Manik Saha won from Town Bardowali, defeating Congress’ Ashish Kumar Saha by 1,257 votes. The TIPRA-Motha won 12 seats.

In Nagaland, the NDPP-BJP alliance eased to victory on Thursday, with chief minister Neiphiu Rio’s Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party winning 25 seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party claiming 12 to cross the majority mark of 31 in the 60-member House.

Here are the highlights:

2:10 pm: Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma thanks people for voting his party as NPP wins 5 seats and is ahead in 21 seats. “We are short on a few numbers, so we’ll wait for the final results to come out. We will see what next steps are to be taken based on the final results,” he said. Tripura CM Manik Saha wins from his constituency of Town Bardowali constituency.

1:50 pm: Hekani Jakhalu, a Delhi University alumnus, lawyer, activist, and social entrepreneur became the first woman to enter the Nagaland Assembly. She won from the Dimapur III Assembly constituency on a NDPP ticket. Read the full report here.

12:58pm: As per initial trends, in Nagaland, NDPP has won 1 seat, leading on 25 seats along with BJP’s  two seats which is leading on 12 seats. Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is moving ahead with 3 seats. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale’s Republican Party of India (Athawale) wins two seats.

12:48pm: In Nagaland, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale’s Republican Party of India (Athawale) wins two seats, NDPP wins 1 seat, leading on 25 seats, BJP won two seats while leading on 12 seats. Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is moving ahead on 3 seats.

12:20pm: In the initial trends in Nagaland, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party has won 1 seat and leading with 22 seats. The BJP has bagged two seats and moving ahead with 11 seats while the Republican Party of India (Athawale) wins one seat and leads on one seat.

12:09pm: As per ECI trends, in Nagaland, the BJP-NDPP alliance leads on with 32 seats, and wins 2 out of 60 seats.

11.25am: As counting continues, BJP is set to return to power in Tripura. It has crossed the majority mark leading with 31 seats in the 60-seat Assembly.

11:17am: In Tripura, initial trends suggest that BJP is leading with 26 seats, CPIM-Congress alliance in 18 while Tipra Motha moves ahead with 13.

11:10am: As per initial trends, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party is leading with 22 of the total 59 seats so far. Meanwhile, BJP and Congress are moving ahead with 6 seats each.

10:45am: Leader of Opposition of Meghalaya and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma leading from Songsak constituency.

10:32am: As per initial trends in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party is leading on 17 of the total 59 seats so far.

10:09am: In Tripura, BJP is leading on with 17 seats, Tipra Motha Party with 11, Communist Party of India (Marxist) is moving ahead on 6 seats while Congress with 4 seats.

10:01am: In Meghalaya, National People’s Party is leading on 11 seats, United Democratic Party is ahead with 4 seats, while BJP and Congress is leading on 3 seats each. All India Trinamool Congress leading on 2 seats.

9:59am: In Nagaland, incumbent Chief Minister and Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party candidate Neiphiu Rio leading from Northern Angami-II assembly constituency in early trends.

9:58am: In Nagaland, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party is leading on 11 seats, BJP won one seat and leading on 3 seats while Janata Dal (United), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) Nationalist Congress Party & Republican Party of India (Athawale) leading on one seat each.

9:54am: In Tripura, as per initial trends, BJP is leading on 12 seats, Congress leading on three seats, while Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Tipra Motha Party are leading on two seats each.

9:20 am: 

As counting continues in Meghalaya, Trinamool Congress leading on two seats.

9:10 am: 

With counting underway in Tripura, Congress and BJP leading on one seat each.

8:10 am
