New Delhi: The Congress marched with 17 opposition parties in Delhi Monday, demanding a joint parliamentary committee to probe into the Adani-Hindenburg issue, while also drumming up support for its strategy ahead after the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi.

Congress’ rival in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), joined Monday’s programmes, first attending the opposition meet called by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and then participating in the march. Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi was also a part of the protests.

This show of strength comes after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha last week following his conviction in a 2019 defamation case by a Surat court.

After Rahul’s disqualification, all opposition parties, including those who’ve maintained a distance from the Congress like the TMC, AAP and BRS, had come out in his support.

Speaking to the media after the opposition march, Mallikarjun Kharge thanked all opposition leaders for their support.

“All these parties are worried about the condition of democracy in the country and how it is functioning,” Kharge said.

All Congress MPs were dressed in black to protest what they’ve termed the “muting” of democracy.

“We want to show that in this country, Modiji is finishing democracy bit by bit. First, he finished all autonomous bodies. On the other hand, those who won elections, they were threatened and intimidated so that this party’s government could be formed. Thirdly, ED (Enforcement Directorate) is being used to bring subservience to those who are not bowing down,” Kharge said.

The parties which participated in the protest are DMK, Samajwadi Party, JD(U), BRS, CPI(M), RJD, NCP, CPI, IUML, MDMK, Kerala Congress, TMC, RSP, AAP, National Conference and Shiva Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).
