New Delhi: A day after Trinamool Congress leader Nusrat Jahan announced that her marriage was not valid in India, the Lok Sabha MP is facing severe backlash on social media. BJP leader Amit Malviya even questioned if Jahan lied on the Parliament floor while taking her oath.
Malviya, who is in-charge of BJP’s Information & Technology department, tweeted Thursday: “TMC MP Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jain’s personal life, who she is married to or who she is living in with, should not be anyone’s concern. But she is an elected representative and is on record in the Parliament that she is married to Nikhil Jain. Did she lie on the floor of the House?”
His tweet was accompanied by a video of Jahan taking oath, where she mentioned her name as “Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jain”.

A picture of her profile from Lok Sabha’s official website has also gone viral on social media, where her former partner Nikhil Jain has been mentioned as her spouse.

Meanwhile, some social media users also speculated if using a wrong name while taking oath invalidated the oath altogether.

I understand relationship issues, break-ups, divorces etc’…
But, taking oath in Parliament with a false name and Filing a false and fabricated affidavit for election candidature is downright criminal act and punishable under many provisions of Indian Law. (1/2)#nusratjahan

Nusrat Jahan’s separation
Actor-turned-MP Nusrat Jahan has been garnering headlines for the past few days due to her separation from partner Nikhil Jain.
Jahan addressed her divorce and separation rumours Wednesday and said that her marriage ceremony was invalid according to Indian law, since it was held in Turkey.
“Being on foreign land, as per Turkish Marriage Regulation, the ceremony is invalid. It was interfaith marriage, it requires validation under the Special Marriage Act, which didn’t happen. As per the Court of Law, it’s not marriage but relationship/live-in”, the TMC MP said in a statement.
She added: “Thus the question of divorce does not arise. Our separation happened long back, but I did not speak about it as I intended to keep my private life to myself.”
In her statement, she also targeted Jain, without taking his name, and accused him of mishandling her money.
“I have already taken this up with the concerned banking authority and a police complaint shall be filed shortly. In the past, details of all family accounts were handed over to him, upon his requests and none of me or my family members was aware of any instructions given to the bank via our accounts. He has also been mishandling my funds from various accounts without my knowledge and consent. I am still battling it out with the bank & if need be, would release proof of the same,” the statement read.
The couple had tied the knot on 19 June 2019 in a ceremony in Turkey, just after Jahan had won the Lok Sabha polls from the Basirhat constituency.
Jahan and her actor contemporary Mimi Chakraborty, who are both first-time MPs, had skipped the oath-taking ceremony of Lok Sabha due to the wedding.
