In today’s featured cartoon, Satish Acharya depicts how a five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court held that the Modi government’s 2016 decision to demonetise currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination — a move which is believed to have delivered a massive blow to the economy — did not amount to a violation of the RBI Act.

E.P. Unny, too, draws on the SC’s 4:1 decision in favour of the 2016 note ban, alluding to the opposition’s assertion that while the move may not have been unconstitutional, it “destroyed lakhs of MSMEs, the informal sector, and livelihood of lakhs of people”.

At 8.31 per cent, India’s unemployment rate rose to a 16-month high in December. Kirtish Bhatt imbues bleakness with humour, while pointing out that not much has changed in terms of the employment status of a sizeable chunk of India’s working population over the last year-and-a-half. In the illustration, a man tells a reporter: “What is unemployed? Say unemployed ji. I’ve been unemployed for over 16 months, I’m now counted as a senior.”
