Chennai, Apr 17 (PTI) Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan on Friday said women can be considered to have truly won only if the 33 per cent reservation is implemented within the existing number of seats in Lok Sabha.
Speaking to reporters here on the sidelines of his campaign for the April 23 assembly elections, he said, “We have won. The 33 per cent reservation has to be promulgated within the numbers we already have. We won’t allow it otherwise.” Echoing ally DMK’s position, Haasan has supported the principle of 33 per cent reservation for women, but cautioned that the current implementation framework could amount to a potential “political reset” or a “conspiracy” to weaken regional power.
In a major setback to the union government, a Constitution Amendment Bill to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816 was defeated on Friday. PTI JR JR ROH
