Woman smuggles gold from Dubai, stages fake abduction at Calicut Airport to dodge financiers

Stay updated with ThePrint:

Malappuram (Keralam), Nov 4 (PTI) A woman who allegedly smuggled gold from Dubai into Kerala staged a fake abduction outside Calicut airport on Wednesday to avoid handing the gold over to the people who had financed the operation.

The incident set off a high-speed car chase involving the police.

An officer at Karipur police station said the woman and three others involved in the staged abduction have been arrested.

According to the police, a group arrived at the airport in a blue Baleno and drove the woman away, making it look like an abduction.

The financier, who had come to the airport to collect the gold, was seen chasing the vehicle. Seeing this, a police team stationed at the spot gave chase, and footage of the pursuit was aired on TV channels.

The car evaded the police jeep a couple of times, but after a 12-km chase it was intercepted, and all its occupants, including the woman, were taken into custody.

During interrogation, the woman reportedly told police that she had planned the drama to avoid handing the gold over to the financiers. Police said further investigation will establish who else was involved.

On Monday, a gang had attempted to abduct another woman gold carrier from the airport after she arrived with over 800 grams of smuggled gold. Police foiled that attempt and apprehended two of the alleged abductors. PTI HMP SSK
