Kolkata, Sep 3 (PTI) West Bengal minister Joyel Murmu, accompanied by senior officials of the Malda district administration, on Thursday reviewed the ongoing development works and riverbank erosion response in several areas of the district.
Murmu, the Minister of State for Irrigation, along with District Magistrate Rajanvir Sing Kapur, inspected various sites in the district and reviewed the progress of development projects, field-level implementation and public service delivery, officials said.
The district administration has accorded special attention to erosion-affected areas of Ratua-I, Manikchak and Bhutni Diara.
In view of erosion damage to the Bhutni ring bund at Keshorpur and a rising trend in the Ganga water level, dwarf-wall strengthening and other protective measures are being undertaken, while all departments concerned have been put on alert, an official statement said.
Emergency riverbank and embankment protection work is also underway at vulnerable stretches in Ratua-I and Manikchak, involving sandbag layering, installation of porcupine structures and strengthening of critical sections.
A coordinated round-the-clock response is being maintained through field inspections, relief distribution, operational flood shelters, cooked food arrangements, drinking water and sanitation facilities, medical camps, temporary lighting, generators, deployment of Civil Defence personnel, boats and public warning systems, an official statement said.
At Kataha Diara, cooked meals are being provided daily to affected people, while tarpaulins, disaster management kits, ice, chira (puffed rice) and molasses are being distributed.
Flood shelters have been activated and boats deployed to facilitate the shifting of vulnerable families to safer locations, according to the statement. PTI SUS RG
