Bijnor (UP), Jun 21 (PTI) Three people, including a village head here, were arrested for allegedly conspiring to get a calf slaughtered in an attempt to falsely implicate a potential rival in the upcoming gram pradhan election, police said on Sunday.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Prakash Kumar said parts of a bovine calf were found in a field in Changipur village under Noorpur police station limits on June 18. Initial allegations were being levelled against one Hasan and his associates in connection with the incident.

However, acting on a tip-off, police arrested Faizan following an encounter. During questioning, he allegedly revealed that he and his associates had carried out the act at the behest of incumbent village pradhan Jagpal and his brother Kiranpal.

The accused allegedly planned to implicate Hasan in the case and have him sent to jail. Police said Jagpal feared that Hasan might contest the forthcoming gram pradhan election and defeat him.

Based on the investigation, police arrested Jagpal, Kiranpal, Faizan and two other accused in the case.

Further legal proceedings are underway, police said. PTI COR CDN SHS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
