Guwahati, Oct 21 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said Vijaya Dashami symbolises new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, highlighting a state government scheme that provides financial assistance to educated youth to start their own ventures.

In a social media post, Sarma said the festival marks Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura and offers an opportunity to begin new endeavours with her blessings.

“On Vijayadashami, we celebrate Maa Durga’s victory over Mahishasura: the triumph of good over evil, and of courage over doubt. It is also a day of new beginnings, when we start fresh endeavours with the Mother’s blessings,” he said.

The chief minister said the state’s ‘Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan’ was designed to support such initiatives by providing financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh to educated young people to start their own ventures, with half the amount given as a grant and the other half as an interest-free loan.

Sarma said young women across the state were coming forward to establish their own enterprises and become job creators rather than job seekers.

“This is the spirit of an Atmanirbhar Assam: a state where a young woman with a good idea does not have to wait for permission or capital to build her future,” he said.

Sarma said the nine-day festival honoured Goddess Durga in her various forms and called upon people to celebrate the occasion by supporting women aspiring to build their own ventures.

“Subho Bijoya. May Maa Durga bless Assam’s daughters with victory in every endeavour. Jai Maa Durga,” he added. PTI DG DG SOM

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
