Alappuzha (Keralam), Oct 18 (PTI) PWD Minister P K Basheer on Sunday said the state Vigilance Department would conduct a probe into the construction of the Alappuzha-Changanassery road during the previous LDF government’s tenure.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Makkekadavu-Nere Kadavu bridge here, Basheer said the LDF government spent Rs 647 crore on the 25-km-long Alappuzha-Changanassery road.

“A fund of Rs 647 crore for a 25-km-long road? You all should think how that road was constructed with such a big amount,” he said.

Basheer said Ambalappuzha MLA G Sudhakaran had submitted a complaint regarding the road.

“I want to tell you all that there will be an investigation into it by the state Vigilance Department,” he added.

The road was inaugurated by then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in March this year, shortly before the Assembly election.

The stretch is Keralam’s first semi-elevated highway, reconstructed to ensure uninterrupted vehicle movement during heavy flooding in the Kuttanad region of Alappuzha district.

However, following floods in August this year, a major stretch of the road remained inundated, affecting vehicle movement. PTI TBA TBA SA

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
