Champawat, Apr 19 (PTI) A 19-year-old polytechnic student died after being struck in the neck by a javelin during a sports competition rehearsal at Goral Chaur ground here, police said on Sunday.

Champawat SP Rekha Yadav said the incident occurred during a sports event organised by the Government Polytechnic College on Saturday. Students were practising in different sections of the ground when a javelin thrown by a participant hit Somendra Bohra, a second-year student who was playing football nearby.

Bohra collapsed immediately and was rushed to the Champawat District Hospital, where he was declared dead.

“The spot has been inspected, and forensic evidence has been collected. Further action will be taken based on the post-mortem report,” Yadav added.

The officer said that the police have yet to receive a formal complaint in the matter.

Dr Heera Singh Hayanki, Hospital Superintendent, said the javelin struck below the neck. The student succumbed to severe internal injuries upon arrival at the facility.

The deceased was a resident of remote Machhiyad village and lived with his aunt in Champawat city for his studies. His father, Bhupal Singh Bohra, works for a company in Gujarat.

Family members said Bohra had cleared the Agniveer recruitment last year. However, his parents preferred that he pursue a diploma at the polytechnic college for a better future.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister and Champawat MLA Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep grief over the incident. He spoke to the bereaved family over the phone to offer his condolences.

The student’s last rites were performed on Sunday after his father arrived from Gujarat. District Magistrate Manish Kumar also visited the cremation ground to pay his tributes. PTI COR AKY AKY HIG HIG
