Dehradun, Oct 21 (PTI) The Congress on Wednesday criticised the Uttarakhand government’s decision to convene the assembly session at Bhararisain in Gairsain, while scheduling the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, which sets the agenda and proceedings of the session, in Dehradun.

The two-day assembly session starts on October 27, while the BAC meeting is scheduled to take place on October 24.

In a statement, Chakrata MLA Pritam Singh, who is also a BAC member, called it a “glaring example of discrepancy between the government’s words and its actions.

“This is both contradictory and unjustifiable. Since the assembly session is to take place in Bhararisain, the corresponding meeting of the Business Advisory Committee should also be held there. This decision suggests that holding the assembly session in Gairsain has been reduced to a mere formality, and that the state government lacks any genuine commitment to developing Gairsain as a summer capital,” he said.

Singh further said that while the BJP government has been taking credit for declaring Bhararisain the summer capital, it remains “indifferent toward holding regular assembly sessions there or developing the infrastructure befitting a state capital”.

“This dual stance of the government has now been exposed before the people of the state,” he added.

The Chakrata MLA also questioned the government for convening the assembly session for two days, as the state faces “numerous pressing issues – including unemployment, inflation, corruption, law and order, the safety of women, outward migration, the challenges faced by disaster-affected areas, and various matters related to development – all of which require comprehensive discussion within the House.”

He demanded that the government clarify how a “meaningful and detailed deliberation” on these serious state-level problems can possibly take place during a session lasting only two days.

“The legislative assembly is the supreme democratic forum, providing elected representatives the opportunity to raise the concerns of the public and demand accountability from the government. The state government should ensure an adequate duration for the Assembly session so that all significant matters of public interest can be thoroughly discussed,” Singh said.

He urged the state government and Speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan to reconsider holding the BAC committee meeting at Bhararisain instead.

He also requested an extension of the assembly session to allow for an in-depth discussion on critical issues affecting the people of the state. PTI SPY KSI

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
