Rudrapur, Oct 18 (PTI) A 35-year-old farmer paid with his life after he intervened in a dispute between two groups at a village in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district.
Satnam Singh of Siddha Navadiya village was shot dead late Saturday night when he was returning from his fields. He was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries but passed away while undergoing treatment. The incident has left the village in a state of panic.
According to reports, a dispute had occurred between two groups in the village about four days ago. Tensions had arisen following an assault on, or threats made against, an individual named Kuldeep Singh.
It is said that Satnam Singh had intervened during that dispute, earning the ire of Kuldeep Singh and his group.
Around 10 pm on Saturday, the assailants reportedly arrived at Satnam Singh’s home, began pelting it with stones, and opened fire. During the commotion, a young man from the family attempted to record the incident from the rooftop. The assailants allegedly fired shots in his direction, though he narrowly escaped harm.
At the time, Satnam Singh was away checking his harvested crops, but as the assailants were leaving the scene, they encountered him and fired on his chest.
Family members initially took Satnam Singh to the sub-district hospital in Sitarganj. Given the severity of his condition, he was referred to the District Hospital in Rudrapur, where he succumbed to his injuries late at night. The police have now sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
Following the incident, the family of the deceased alleged that they had previously filed a complaint with the police regarding death threats, but no effective action was taken in time.
According to Superintendent of Police (City) Pramod Kumar, a case has been registered on a complaint filed by the deceased’s brother against eight named individuals and several unnamed others in connection with the crime. Police teams are conducting raids in search of the accused. PTI COR SPY SPY AMJ
