Raipur, Sep 5 (PTI) Chhattisgarh Governor Ramen Deka on Saturday urged teachers and students to familiarise themselves with new technologies in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), but stressed that it should be done judiciously, responsibly and in line with human values.
Addressing a state-level teachers’ felicitation function here at Lok Bhavan on Teachers’ Day, Deka said the vast world of information available through Google and digital technology should not lead to excessive dependence on technology at the cost of independent thinking and intellectual development, an official statement said.
On the occasion, Deka and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai felicitated 63 outstanding teachers of the state with the Governor’s Awards for 2025-26. Four outstanding teachers were also presented with the State Teachers’ Honour Memorial Awards, it said.
“AI should be our assistant, not our controller,” the Governor said, urging teachers to encourage students to use technology to acquire knowledge, innovate and develop their personalities.
Deka said there is serious discussion underway in several countries over the use of smartphones and social media by students.
“Technology can provide us information, but values, sensitivity, discipline, inspiration and the right direction in life can be imparted only by a teacher,” he said, adding that the role of teachers has become more important in changing times.
The Governor said the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has laid an important foundation for making the country’s education system more practical, skill-based, multilingual and student-centric, and that significant changes in the nature of education would be witnessed in the coming years.
Teaching is not merely a job but a “great and dignified responsibility”, Deka said, adding that teachers educate students not only through their knowledge but also through their conduct.
In his address, CM Sai said India’s education tradition had always been rich and glorious, with its objective being not merely to obtain a degree or job but to make individuals knowledgeable, cultured, capable and responsible citizens.
The state government has been working continuously to improve the quality of education and provide better educational opportunities to every child, he said.
“After rationalisation (exercise in school education department), there is now not a single school in the state without a teacher,” Sai said, adding that the government has been focusing on linking education with values, skills and employment while implementing NEP (National Education Policy) 2020.
He said an initiative has been launched in the Bastar region to provide primary education to children in their local dialects, making the learning process easier and more effective.
The government has also been promoting parent-teacher meetings in government schools to actively involve parents in their children’s education and school activities, Sai said.
He said 341 schools have been selected under the PM SHRI scheme and are being developed as centres of modern facilities, better academic environments and quality education.
Besides, 150 schools are being started in the name of Swami Vivekananda, while long-pending promotions of teachers have also been completed on priority, he said.
Providing equal opportunities for quality education to children in remote and sensitive areas such as Bastar is a priority, Sai said, adding that education cities were being developed at Orchha and Jagargunda in the region for the purpose.
The chief minister said the government aims to build a developed Chhattisgarh alongside a developed India by 2047, and the Education Department and teachers would have the most important role in achieving the goal.
On the occasion, School Education Minister Gajendra Yadav announced the names of 64 teachers selected for the State Teachers’ Honour for 2026-27. PTI TKP NR
