Azamgarh (UP), Oct 17 (PTI) A Delhi-based engineer and his father died while his wife and kids were injured after their car rammed into a divider and overturned on the Purvanchal Expressway here on Saturday, police said.

The family was travelling from Delhi to their village in Mau district in Uttar Pradesh to attend a relative’s wedding when the accident occurred near Ohni village at the 216.2 km marker of the expressway in the Tahbarpur area.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing the car to go out of control, they said.

Circle Officer (Sagri) Deshraj Singh said that the deceased have been identified as Shadab (52) and his father, Khurshid Ahmed (83), who hail from Sultanpur village in Ghosi area of Mau district.

Shadab, a civil engineer who lived with his family in Haji Colony in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar, was driving the vehicle. His wife, Asma Bano (45), his daughter, Mayra (15) and his son, Adnan Ahmed (9), were injured in the accident..

The speeding car first hit the divider on the car’s right side before veering to the left side of the road and overturning. The impact was so severe that the vehicle had extensive damage. CCTV footage of the accident has also surfaced, police said.

A rescue team from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) arrived at the scene and transported the injured to a hospital, where doctors declared Shadab and Khurshid Ahmed dead.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem, while those injured in the accident have been admitted to a private hospital for treatment. PTI COR NAV SKY

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
