Bareilly (UP), Sep 3 (PTI) A court in Bareilly on Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his brother-in-law with a sharp-edged weapon, allegedly over his resentment towards his sister’s love marriage.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Amrita Shukla also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the accused, identified as Said Khan, son of Rais Mian Khan.
According to police, Zakir Ahmed, a resident of Hajiyapur under the Baradari police station area, had married Baby about 15 years ago against the wishes of her family.
Her brother, Said Khan, was unhappy with the marriage and relations between the two men remained strained, police said.
On May 5, 2024, Khan was at home when he saw Zakir and allegedly attacked him with a knife, according to the prosecution.
Zakir sustained serious injuries in the attack and was taken to a hospital by his family, where he died, police said.
A case was registered at Baradari police station under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
The prosecution produced eight witnesses before the court.
The court also sentenced Khan to five years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 under the Arms Act, taking the total fine to Rs 30,000, police said.
In case of failure to pay the fine, the accused will have to undergo an additional two months’ imprisonment, they said.
Police said the conviction was secured following effective prosecution under the “Operation Conviction” campaign. The prosecution was conducted with the assistance of the prosecution officer, court official, investigating officer and other members of the police and prosecution teams. PTI COR KIS SHS
