Gorakhpur, Sep 10 (PTI) Police have registered an FIR against the warden of a girls’ hostel in Mohaddipur here after residents alleged that she placed a mobile phone in a bathroom to record them while they used the washroom, officials said on Thursday.
The police have seized the phone allegedly found concealed inside a tin shed in the bathroom with its camera switched on and facing the toilet area.
Students claimed the device contained videos of several girls and that some clips were subsequently circulated on social media.
The warden, identified as Aarti Singh, told police during questioning that she had left her phone in recording mode at around 10 pm to identify students allegedly disposing of sanitary pads improperly in the bathroom. She denied any malicious intent, police said.
SP (City) Nimish Patil said an FIR was registered at the Cantt police station on Wednesday evening on the basis of a written complaint submitted by hostel residents.
The complaint alleges that the warden violated the privacy of students by recording them while they were bathing and using the washroom.
The hostel houses 26 girls in 20 rooms, most of whom are college students or preparing for competitive examinations, police said.
According to the students, a newly admitted resident spotted the phone in the bathroom on the night of September 8 and alerted others after making a video of the device. They alleged that footage of five to six girls was found on the phone and that recording had continued for nearly three hours.
The discovery led to protests by the residents, following which police intervened.
Police are examining the seized phone and its contents, Patil said, adding that further action would be taken on the basis of evidence collected during the investigation. PTI COR CDN PRK
