Ballia (UP), Apr 17 (PTI) A helper was killed, and the truck driver critically injured after their vehicle lost control, broke through a bridge railing and plunged into the Tons River here, police said on Friday.

The incident took place around 2.30 am on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday in the Phephana area on the Ballia-Varanasi highway, they said.

The police said a coal-laden truck went out of control, hit the railing of the bridge located between Phephana and Chitbaragaon and plunged into the river.

Phephana SHO Vishwadeep Singh said the police rushed to the spot after receiving information and recovered the body of the helper and sent it for a post-mortem.

The deceased was identified as Pankaj Yadav, 25, a resident of Bihar’s Buxar district.

The driver, Lau Kharwar, 30, also from Buxar, was rescued in a critical condition and admitted to a hospital in Varanasi, the SHO said. PTI COR NAV SMV SHS
