UP governor, CM attend Somnath Sankalp Mahotsav in Varanasi, offer prayers

Varanasi (UP), May 11 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday attended the Somnath Sankalp Mahotsav in Varanasi and offered prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple with holy water brought from Somnath Temple, officials said.

Priests from Somnath and Kashi Vishwanath jointly performed the rituals, according to a Uttar Pradesh government statement.

Patel and Adityanath performed ‘jalabhishek’ of Kashi Vishwanath and prayed for public welfare and prosperity of the state. The chief minister also presented an angavastram (ceremonial stole) and a Rudraksha garland to the governor at the temple premises.

The two leaders were welcomed by priests and women and girls dressed in yellow amid chants of ‘Har Har Mahadev’ and traditional music, including the sound of the damru.

Later, they participated in a collective ‘Om’ chanting at the temple premises and attended aarti at Somnath Bhavan, worshipping a Parthiv Shivling modelled on the Somnath Jyotirlinga.

They also visited an exhibition organised as part of the ‘Somnath Swabhiman Parv’.

Uttar Pradesh Ministers Anil Rajbhar, Dayashankar Mishra and Hansraj Vishwakarma; Varanasi Mayor Ashok Tiwari; MLAs Saurabh Srivastava, Neelkanth Tiwari, Avdhesh Singh, Tribhuwan Ram, Sunil Patel; District Panchayat Chairperson Poonam Maurya and others were present on the occasion, the statement added.
