Saharanpur (UP), Oct 10 (PTI) Four persons were killed while around 12 were injured when a speeding container truck rammed into a tractor-trolley carrying devotees here on Saturday morning, police said.

The devotees were returning to Sardhana in Meerut after visiting the Maa Shakumbhari Devi temple here to collect the sacred flame (‘jyoti’) for Navratri.

The accident occurred near pillar number 13 of a flyover in the Deoband police station area, officials said, adding that the container truck driver and his helper have been arrested, and further legal proceedings are underway.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Mayank Pathak told PTI that the deceased have been identified as Aman Rana (25), Sagar (22), Pankaj (25), and Ramesh (55 — all residents of Kushavali village in Sardhana area of Meerut.

Pathak said the devotees had traveled to Shakumbhari Devi in the tractor-trolley to collect the sacred flame ahead of the commencement of Navratri on Sunday.

After visiting the temple, they were returning to their village in Meerut. Having traveled through the night, they reached Deoband at 8:30 am and had stopped for tea and breakfast when the speeding container truck struck their tractor-trolley from behind.

Personnel from the Deoband police station and passersby rushed the injured to the district hospital, while some were taken to Meerut by their families for treatment, officials said.

Saharanpur District Magistrate Arvind Chauhan and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhinandan Singh visited the district hospital and issued instructions regarding relief and medical treatment, they added. PTI COR NAV ARB
