Lucknow, Jun 6 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to further modernise the railway security system in the state and make it more technology-driven and result-oriented.
He was reviewing the functioning of the Government Railway Police (GRP) at a high-level meeting.
According to an official statement, the chief minister said Uttar Pradesh is the country’s largest rail traffic state, with millions of passengers using railway services every day. He stressed that passenger safety, women’s security, crime control and prompt police assistance should remain the highest priorities.
Adityanath said there should be no place for crime and anti-social activities in the railway network and directed officials to strictly implement a “zero-tolerance” policy. He also called for maximum use of modern technology to strengthen security arrangements at railway premises, platforms and trains.
During the meeting, the Director General, Railways, informed the chief minister that the GRP, established in 1867, is currently functioning through six divisions, 65 police stations and 89 temporary outposts. The force is responsible for the security of more than 3,031 trains, around 1,550 railway stations and over 30 lakh rail passengers daily.
Reviewing railway track and train security, the chief minister directed officials to further strengthen coordination among railway authorities, the Railway Protection Force and local police.
Officials informed the meeting that measures such as joint patrolling, drone and CCTV-based surveillance, digital verification, inspection applications for checking suspicious persons, strengthening of intelligence networks, and monitoring of scrap markets and sensitive locations are being implemented to enhance railway track security.
Adityanath also directed officials to launch a special campaign to completely eliminate incidents of stone-pelting on trains and railway premises, according to the statement. He was informed that public awareness campaigns, security outreach programmes, counselling of parents and youths, the Rail Mitra network, speedy prosecution and effective monitoring had led to a significant decline in such incidents across various railway divisions.
Reviewing crowd-management arrangements, the chief minister directed officials to ensure that passengers do not face inconvenience during festivals, major events, recruitment examinations and other special occasions.
The chief minister further said women’s safety remains among the government’s top priorities and directed officials to ensure a secure environment for women across the railway network.
He also reviewed cases related to human trafficking and the recovery of missing children and directed officials to make such operations more effective, the statement said. Reviewing the prosecution system, Adityanath emphasised the need to ensure swift and effective punishment for offenders. Discussing future requirements, he directed that the state government extend necessary support for the expansion and modernisation of the GRP, including deployment of additional manpower and provision of equipment.
