New Delhi, Apr 17 (PTI) Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan on Friday said the unopposed election of Harivansh as deputy chairman of the Upper House is a “resounding affirmation” of the confidence and trust he enjoys across party lines.
He congratulated Harivansh on his election as deputy chairman for the third term and wished him every success during his tenure.
On Friday, nominated member Harivansh was elected Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha unopposed. It is the third term as Deputy Chairman for the journalist-turned-politician.
The Office of the Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, fell vacant after the term of Harivansh ended on April 9.
“His (Harivansh) unopposed election today is not merely a procedural outcome, it is a resounding affirmation of the deep trust, confidence and the respect that he enjoys across party lines and among all sections of this august house,” Radhakrishnan said.
The Chairman termed the re-election of Harivansh to the high constitutional office for the third consecutive time as a rare distinction.
“It reflects not only continuity, but also consistency in the discharge of duties marked by fairness, restraint and an unwavering commitment to the highest traditions of parliamentary democracy,” he said.
Radhakrishnan said the stewardship of Harivansh in the chair has, over the years, been characterised by sobriety, balance and a quiet authority that commands respect without ever demanding it.
The Chairman appreciated the collective wisdom of the House in electing him unopposed.
“In a vibrant democracy such as ours, contestation is natural and indeed essential. Differences of opinion enrich our deliberations. Yet moments such as these, when the House speaks in one voice, underscore the shared commitment of all members to uphold the dignity, decorum and institutional strength of Parliament,” he said.
Radhakrishnan said the deputy chairman brings to this august house a rich and diverse experience of public life.
“His ever courteous demeanour and characteristic smile, even in moments of intense debate and occasional provocation, have lent a reassuring sense of stability to the proceedings of this house,” he added.
Stating that presiding over Rajya Sabha was no easy task, Radhakrishnan said Harivansh has discharged his responsibility with remarkable composure, patience and impartiality, The chairman said the newly elected members would find in Harivansh a guide and a source of inspiration in understanding the nuances, conventions and responsibilities that come with parliamentary functioning.
“I am certain that he will continue to adorn this high office with distinction and will discharge his responsibilities with the same zeal, dedication, impartiality and sense of duty that befits the stature and the dignity of this August house. I am wishing him every success in his tenure,” Radhakrishnan concluded.
