Pune, July 23 (PTI) Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will be conferred with this year’s Lokmanya Tilak National Award, it was announced on Wednesday.

The award was instituted by the Lokmanya Tilak Smarak Trust in 1983.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi had received the award in 2023, the last year’s recipient was writer and Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murty.

The award ceremony will be held on August 1 to mark the 105th death anniversary of Tilak, an iconic leader of the freedom movement, trust president Dr Rohit Tilak said at a press conference here.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar and former Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde are expected to attend the ceremony.

Rohit Tilak highlighted Gadkari’s contribution to national infrastructure on this occasion. “Recognising that roads are key to development, Gadkari has laid an extensive highway network across the country. Through public-private partnership models, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s infrastructure,” he said.

The award comprises a memento, citation and cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

Socialist leader S M Joshi was its first recipient. Over the years, the award has been conferred upon several eminent personalities including Indira Gandhi, Dr Manmohan Singh and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. PTI SPK KRK
