The government of India has notified the operational guidelines for the implementation of incentives for states and local bodies (DISCOMs) under the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme. The incentives worth Rs 4,950 crore are to be distributed to DISCOMs for promoting rooftop solar capacity in the country, a PIB press release stated.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy notified the guidelines on July 18, 2024. The scheme is one of the key measures in the government’s efforts to promote rooftop solar capacity and enable residential households to generate their own electricity.

Under the scheme, DISCOMs will be given incentives based on the extent of additional grid-connected rooftop solar capacity they install beyond the baseline level. The incentives are structured in such a way that they reward DISCOMs with 5 percent of the applicable benchmark cost for achieving an additional capacity of 10 to 15 percent over the installed base and 10 percent for capacities beyond 15 percent.
