Pune, Jun 19 (PTI) Undeterred by continuous rains, thousands of `warkaris’ or pilgrims set out for Pandharpur from Alandi in the district on Thursday, carrying the palanquins of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj amid chants of ‘Jai Hari Vitthal’ and ‘Dnyanoba Mauli Tukaram’.

Decked in the beautiful palkhi (palanquin) decorated with flowers, the footprints of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj were taken out from Alandi as part of `wari’, the annual pilgrimage to the Lord Vitthal temple in Pandharpur in Solapur district, 225 km away.

On Wednesday, the palkhi of Sant Tukaram Maharaj departed from Dehu in Pune district. Both the palkhis will arrive in Pune on Friday on the way to Pandharpur.

Police and district administration have made elaborate arrangements to receive them.

The processions of pilgrims from Pune and other parts of the state will reach Pandharpur on July 6, `Ashadhi Ekadashi’ as per Hindu calendar. PTI SPK KRK
