Mangaluru (Karnataka), Jul 24 (PTI) Yasin Bhatkal, co-founder of the banned terror outfit Indian Mujahideen, was produced via video conference before a court here on Thursday, marking the resumption of trial in a 2008 terror case registered under Ullal Police Station.
Bhatkal was the main accused in the case, which involves an alleged plot to carry out terror attacks in various parts of the country.
In 2008, the police arrested seven suspects in the Mukkacheri and Chembugudde areas under Ullal limits. Investigators recovered explosives and bomb-making materials, and alleged that the group was planning large-scale terror strikes across India.
While other accused were tried and sentenced in 2017 — with three receiving life terms and four acquitted — proceedings against Bhatkal were pending due to his absconding status at the time.
Currently lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi, following his conviction in a separate Hyderabad bomb blast case, Bhatkal was not physically produced so far in the Ullal case.
Following coordination between Ullal Police and Tihar Jail authorities, he was finally produced via video conferencing on Thursday.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for August 20.
Bhatkal, also known by aliases such as Sharooq, Dr Arajoo, and Imran, is already serving multiple sentences in high-security prisons. PTI COR JR ROH
